HST vs GST + PST vs GST + QST
Canada does not use one sales tax rate. Some provinces charge a single HST. Others charge federal GST plus a provincial tax. Quebec uses GST plus QST.
For trades, the practical question is: “What do I add to this job total in this province?” Use the table below for the structure, then the helper to turn a subtotal into tax and grand total in CAD.
Built for job pricing, not filing
This page is for quotes, estimates, and client conversations. It is not a substitute for CRA registration decisions, exemptions, or how you remittance taxes.
When you are ready to send a professional document, use the same province on a TradeInvoice quote or invoice so the tax lines match what you showed the client here.
Frequently asked questions
What is the HST rate in Ontario?
Ontario charges HST at 13%. It is a single harmonized rate that replaces separate GST and provincial sales tax on most taxable supplies.
Which provinces are GST only?
Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut charge federal GST at 5% with no provincial sales tax on the same model as GST+PST provinces.
What about Quebec (QST)?
Quebec charges GST (5%) plus QST (9.975%). TradeInvoice shows both lines on documents when you pick Quebec as the tax province.
What is the difference between HST and GST + PST?
HST is one combined rate (Ontario and the Atlantic HST provinces). GST + PST means federal GST plus a separate provincial sales tax (for example BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan). Quebec uses GST + QST.
Is this free to use?
Yes. The rates table and tax-on-amount helper are free with no account. You can also use the full GST/HST calculator to print or save a sheet, or create a free account to put the same province tax on quotes and invoices.
Are these rates the same as on TradeInvoice quotes?
Yes. This page uses the same province table as quotes, invoices, and the GST/HST calculator. Always confirm if a government rate changes.
Is this tax advice?
No. These are field and office estimates for job pricing. Exemptions, place-of-supply rules, registration thresholds, and filing are your responsibility with a bookkeeper or CRA guidance.
Can I put this tax on a real invoice?
With a free TradeInvoice account, pick the province on a quote or invoice and tax lines are filled from the same rates. Free generators also support Canadian tax without signing up.
